Your First Visit to the Dentist

Many people didn’t grow up visiting the dentist regularly as children. If you’ve never been to the dentist, you probably have a lot of questions! Here’s what you should know before your first visit to the dentist.

Why Dental Visits are Important

If you didn’t visit the dentist regularly as a child, it’s normal to feel nervous about making an appointment with a dentist for the first time. It’s a new experience, so you probably don’t know what to expect!

Your first visit to the dentist doesn’t have to be because of an issue or concern. In fact, it can help to visit the dentist for the first time before you experience a problem with your teeth so that you can get to know your dentist and their staff without the added stress of a dental concern.

Preventative dental visits are important because they usually include a dental exam, x-rays, and a professional cleaning to help your dentist spot minor issues before they turn into major issues. Detecting and treating issues like cavities and gum disease early can save a lot of discomfort and cost in the long run.

What Happens During a Dental Visit?

What will happen during your first visit to the dentist can vary between dentists, but it is generally the same. Your dentist will gently check your teeth and gums for signs of decay or inflammation. They may use x-rays or scans, as well, to find out what is going on beneath the surface. If you’re getting a professional cleaning done, the dental hygienist will use special tools to gently help remove tartar build-up and stains, then will polish your teeth so they look their best.

What if I Have a Concern?

If you’ve scheduled your first visit to the dentist because of discomfort or another concern about your teeth, tell the dentist’s office before your visit what you’ve been experiencing. This will help them discern the urgency of the visit and allow them to schedule adequate time for any procedures needed.

If you have any questions about your first visit to the dentist, don’t hesitate to call and ask! Your dental team is here to keep your smile healthy and we want you to feel comfortable and confident about your care every step of the way.

Call our Perryville Dental Office to make an appointment with a dentist who may be able to help you find out more about this topic, and improve your oral health.
